Bamboo Joints
Temporary structures for the IDPs in hiding
in the Bhurma Jungle | AA Dipl7
2008
Along the Thai-Burma border, the concepts of temporary and permanent have lost their connotation as a definition of time. What has taken over is the constant state of precariousness.
The structure is intended as a temporary refuge for the Internally Displaced People in hiding in the Burma Jungle.
A simple tool that inserted into place acts as a connection between two living bamboos enabling fast construction. The inevitable tendency of the curved bamboo to spring back upright makes the connector auto rotate and lock itself into place. The element can be repeated according to a plan to form a structure.
When the IDPs are forced to move on, the connectors are removed and the structure springs back to being a natural bamboo forest, without leaving trace of the people.
